spiritual formation

As part of discipleship, spiritual formation engages the whole person in a life-shaping encounter with God’s revelation in Christ and his inspired word—the Bible. Knowing God’s Story, learning and embracing the convictions and practices that flow from that Story into our lives, is our goal as we invite you into formation-based study. These classes, seminars and other gatherings are for everyone who wants to grow to maturity in Christ!

CORE CLASSES

Cornerstone’s approach to spiritual formation is built on five central themes (cores) shaped by Scripture: story, doctrine, spirituality, history and leadership. Led by Bill Martin, these five core courses are an invitation to grow deeper in your faith.

A six-week class held on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings in January, July, September & November.
Check our calendar of events for upcoming classes.

CORE STORY

“The Bible begins and ends in a garden, and between the two gardens is Gethsemane, where Jesus healed the world and reversed the curse,” do you find yourself wishing you could read the Bible like that? Would your devotional life be richer if you understood how the Bible fits together and how to see its themes unfolding through the history of redemption? These are some of the aims of Core Story, a six week overview of the Bible and its themes.

CORE DOCTRINE

As a confessional church, Cornerstone holds to historic convictions based on the Bible’s authoritative revelation concerning God and man. This six-week course will dive into doctrinal truths about the persons of God and man as Creator / creature and explore how this lived-out worldview can shape our modern lives.

CORE SPIRITUALITY

The Bible isn’t just a handbook for better living, it is a life-shaping invitation to learn “the unforced rhythms of grace.” Spiritual reading is a gift if, as Eugene Peterson says, “the words are assimilated, taken into the soul — eaten, chewed, gnawed, received in unhurried delight.” These six-weeks are designed to help you develop spiritual habits and learn new paths of devotion and delight in God.

CORE HISTORY

History is the place where the story of God and our story intersect. History shapes our identity. If you don’t know your history, you don’t know who you are. As a church in the Reformed tradition our story has been greatly shaped by the epoch-making Protestant Reformation in sixteenth-century Europe. This is a tale of a monk with a mallet taking on the most powerful institutions in the world, starting a movement that would recover the gospel and revive the church for the next 500 years by knocking it off of its ecclesiastical foundations, re-setting it on scripture, grace, faith, Christ, and glory.

CORE LEADERSHIP

Whether you lead a small group, children, or any other ministry area, you need a solid foundation. That foundation is built on an intensive exploration of bedrock biblical doctrines. Core Leadership drills deeply into the doctrines of Scripture and Salvation to quarry their rich applications for ministry in the local church. This 10-week course includes homework and examination and is required for leaders at Cornerstone.
